Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus, is a city full of history and culture. It’s unique because it’s the only divided capital in the world, with a border separating the Greek Cypriot south from the Turkish Cypriot north. Visitors can explore both sides by crossing the checkpoint in the heart of the city. Nicosia’s old town is surrounded by Venetian walls and filled with narrow streets, traditional shops, and beautiful architecture.
The city also has a vibrant modern side, with trendy cafes, restaurants, and museums. It’s a place where ancient history and modern life blend together, making it a fascinating destination for travelers. I visited Nicosia back in June 2024, so here are some of my suggestions, cumulated into 5 best places to visit in Nicosia, Cyprus.

1. Ledra Street Crossing Point
The Ledra Street Crossing Point in Nicosia is a significant and unique place where you can cross from the Greek Cypriot side to the Turkish Cypriot side of the city. Located in the heart of Nicosia’s main shopping street, it’s easy to access and popular with visitors who want to experience both sides of the divided capital.
To cross, you just need to show your passport at the checkpoint, and then you can explore the different cultures, architecture, and lifestyles on each side. The crossing point is a symbol of Nicosia’s history and its ongoing division, but also a place of connection where people can walk freely between two different worlds.
Pro tip: if you want cheaper food, I recommend going to the Turkish Cypriot side! You can compare the difference in food prices when you are there, but you will realize that the Turkish side is always a fraction of the price. This is because the things in Türkiye tend to be a lot cheaper than the usual “Western European” countries, and you can see this being protrayed in Nicosia.
2. Eleftheria Square
Eleftheria Square in Nicosia is the city’s main square and a lively gathering place for locals and visitors. Recently redesigned with a modern touch, it features sleek architecture, wide open spaces, and plenty of greenery.
The square is a central hub connecting the old town’s historic charm with the more modern parts of the city. You’ll find people relaxing, enjoying the fountains, or attending events held there. It’s a great spot to sit and soak in the atmosphere, surrounded by shops, cafes, and important landmarks.
3. Büyük Han
Büyük Han in Nicosia is a historic inn and one of the city’s most famous landmarks. Built in the 16th century during the Ottoman period, it served as a place where travelers could rest.
Today, it’s beautifully restored and has become a cultural hub filled with artisan shops, galleries, and cozy cafes. Its central courtyard, surrounded by arched balconies, is a peaceful spot to relax with a coffee or explore local crafts. Visiting Büyük Han is like stepping back in time, offering a glimpse of traditional architecture and a vibrant atmosphere that captures the spirit of Nicosia’s past and present.
4. Laiki Gitonia
Laiki Gitonia in Nicosia is a charming and traditional neighborhood in the heart of the old town. It’s a pedestrian-only area filled with narrow, cobblestone streets, restored houses, and colorful shops. This lively district is a great place to explore local culture, with plenty of boutiques selling handmade crafts, souvenirs, and local goods.
You’ll also find cozy cafes and tavernas where you can enjoy traditional Cypriot food. Laiki Gitonia is perfect for a leisurely stroll, offering a glimpse of Nicosia’s history and a taste of its warm and welcoming atmosphere.
5. Selimiye Camii
Selimiye Camii in Nicosia is a stunning mosque with a rich history. Originally built as a Gothic cathedral in the 13th century, it was later converted into a mosque during the Ottoman period.
Its mix of architectural styles, with towering minarets and intricate Gothic details, makes it one of the most impressive buildings in the city. Inside, the high vaulted ceilings and simple, serene decor reflect its role as a place of worship. If you want to visit inside, it is free and open from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.
