9 Things to Do in Monaco

Monaco is a tiny country bordered by France, and it is one of the most luxurious places you can visit. From endless yachts to the craziest cars, you will most definitely feel poor there. There are lots of amazing things to do in Monaco, and you will definitely feel like you stepped into a new world of immense wealth. I visited Monaco in August 2024, so here are 9 things to do in Monaco.

When I visited Monaco, I did a day trip from Nice by taking a roundtrip train. I honestly think that it is the perfect amount of time to spend in Monaco, as you don’t need more than one day. In addition, I recommend staying in Nice or any French town near Monaco accessible by train or by bus (just not in Monaco) because it will be a lot cheaper.

1. Visit the Monte-Carlo Casino

The Monte-Carlo Casino is a world-famous, elegant casino in Monaco, known for its grand architecture and luxurious atmosphere. It’s a symbol of glamour, attracting celebrities, wealthy travelers, and James Bond fans alike. Even if you don’t gamble, it’s worth visiting to admire the stunning interiors, with chandeliers, marble columns, and beautiful artwork. Located in the heart of Monte Carlo, the casino also offers breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea.

You can visit the general hall for free from 10am to 1pm. Although the free area is small, the decor is gorgeous. If you want to visit the area where all the gambling happens, you need to pay an entry fee of €19. If you want to play their games, it is only after 2pm.

Also, you need to present a valid national identity card (for EU nationals) or passport with a photograph (driving licences are not accepted), so don’t forget it if you want to enter the casino.

2. Walk along the Formula 1 Grand Prix track

The Formula 1 Grand Prix track in Monaco is one of the most famous and exciting race tracks in the world. It winds through the streets of Monte Carlo, passing by the harbor filled with luxury yachts, the iconic Monte-Carlo Casino, and sharp turns like the famous Fairmont Hairpin. The whole circuit is approximately 3.2 km. I highly recommend walking along the track or at least just a small section of it.

3. Walk up to the Monaco Palais Belvédère

The walk up the Monaco Palais Belvédère is gorgeous. It is just a short walk, and on top of the hill, you get gorgeous views of Monaco. When you walk up, make sure to take your time to look back at the view, since the pretty view will be behind you. Once you get to the top, you will also see lots of cute shops and restaurants where you could spend some time in.

This is also the same direction to take in order to see the Prince’s Palace, the Cathédrale de Monaco and the Jardins Saint Martin.

4. Watch the guard change at the Prince’s Palace

The Prince’s Palace in Monaco is a beautiful and historic royal residence, home to the ruling Grimaldi family. Perched on a hilltop overlooking the Mediterranean, it offers stunning views of the sea and the city below. The palace has a rich history, dating back to the 13th century, and features a mix of architectural styles, including medieval towers and elegant rooms with frescoes and antique furniture.

The inside of the palace is open for visitors, with a cost of €10 for adults and €5 for students.

There is also a guard change at the Prince’s Palace that takes place at 11:55 am everyday. Although not as popular as for example the guard change at Buckingham Palace, if you want a good view of the performance, I recommend getting there 10-15 minutes before, which is when people will start to build up around the performance area.

To get to the Cathédral de Monaco, you will need to walk up the Monaco Palais Belvédère, and pass the Prince’s Palace. Built with white stone, it has a striking Roman-Byzantine design and is the resting place of many of Monaco’s royal family, including Princess Grace. Inside, you’ll find stunning mosaics, an impressive organ, and a calm, spiritual atmosphere.
